Our vacation

Ryan and I were finally blessed to have the opportunity to take our first real vacation without the kids. We spent a week in the US Virgin Islands, returning home July 18th. We had an absolutely fabulous time. We spent 4 days on St. John and 3 on St. Thomas. It was a totally different world there. We did a lot of exploring and got a couple of vacation wounds. We both got stung by jellyfish. I fell flat on my face on one of our hikes back from snorkeling and put a big gash in my toe and was bruised and scraped all up my body. My toe pretty much kept me out of the water for the duration of the trip. I probably could have used a stitch or two, but it seems to be healing okay. I was so mad at myself though! I can't complain too much about laying on the beach, while Ryan snorkeled, but I was still annoyed with myself!

We spent a couple hours in Puerto Rico.

There were many beautiful sights to see on our plane ride.

St. John

We arrived in St. John 24 hours after we had left Portland.
We had dinner at a wonderful little restaurant right on the ocean.
Here's Ryan being goofy!

Waiting for the bus to take us to the head of the trail.

We took a six mile hike, that took us through the forest, from the mountains to the ocean. It was quite the trek, but we saw lots of interesting things along the way.

Here are some petroglyphs that were along side a little stream.

We saw many hermit crabs traveling through the woods.
It was crazy!

Ryan couldn't seem to keep his tongue to himself!

Wouldn't want to run into this tree!

The Kapoak trees were very cool.

There was this one area that seemed to be the home to hundreds of land
crabs. As soon as they'd hear you, they'd scurry sideways into their
holes. It was pretty funny to watch!

Here's one up close and personal!

There were tons of cute little lizards running everywhere. This little
guy was smaller than my pinkie.

...and the creepy

We saw quite a few of these millipeeds.

But these spiders really made me squirm! I was so glad all the webs were

high. One benefit of being short!

We saw quite a few mongoose. They were quite cute!

There were a lot of these termite mounds in the trees. They'd have little trails all over the ground and then they'd lead up a tree.

They were pretty weird.

There was an old sugar mill along the way

It was pretty interesting. Looked like a lot of hard work though.

The bats thought it made a good home!

We finally made it to the beach!

This creepy little guy was kind of cool to watch.

Seeing this shark by the shore made me very glad that we hadn't lugged the snorkeling gear along! We found out later that this was a lemon shark.

It was almost hard to look for shells on this beach, because it was solid shells and coral. There were too many to choose from!

We rented a car one day. Driving on the left was SO weird. The roads there were crazy. They were so narrrow, steep, and curvey, you had to honk your horn before you wend around a curve to let the other drivers know you were coming.

We had fun snorkeling Trunk Bay.

What a man!

Our underwater camera didn't work very well, but we got a couple pictures.

Ryan liked to dive, more than snorkel. That water was so salty, just the thought of a mouth full, gagged me!

This was Watermelon Bay. We snorkeled out to that island and went all around it. Awesome snorkeling. We saw an Eagle Ray, baracuda, sea turtles, jelly fish, and hundreds of beautiful fish.

They had some weird cactus there. Everything seemed to be pokey!

Ryan was always trying to grab the little lizards. He ended up in this viney cactus on that try.

Many beautiful views.

I thought that this little crab was cute. He was hanging out under the boats.
